NUKU’ALOFA-June 9: 12:25am(RNZI)The head of Tonga’s amateur and Olympic committee, Lord Vaea, is putting his final hopes of the country hosting the 2019 Pacific Games in a petition to the King. The prime minister ‘Akilisi Pohiva has told a meeting with the Pacific Games Council that he is adhering to his announcement last month to pull of out of hosting the event. Lord Vaea said Mr Pohiva never gave the council a chance to offer its assistance and alternative options.
NUKU’ALOFA-June 9: 12:21am(RNZI): Tonga’s Heritage Society is starting legal action in a bid to stop the government from developing what it calls a site of huge historical and cultural significance. Preparation has begun in Popua to build a golf course, a park and and canals. Society president ‘Ana Taufe’ulungaki said the site was where Tongan royalty was established, where the Lapita people arrived, and where Captain James Cook and his crew were welcomed.
NUKU’ALOFA-June 8: 4:12pm(Inside The Games): The Tongan Government are facing the threat of legal action after Prime Minister ‘Akilisi Pōhiva confirmed the country’s decision to withdraw from hosting the 2019 Pacific Games was final. Pōhiva refused to financially support the event and declined to negotiate a solution during a meeting with Pacific Games Council (PGC) chairman Vidhya Lakhan and chief executive Andrew Minogue. Lakhan and Minogue had travelled to Nuku’alofa in a last-ditch bid to ensure the 2019 event remains in Tonga.
