UPDATE: Tonga out of soccer’s World Cup qualifier
NUKU’ALOFA-September 2: 6.20pm (Nuku’alofa Times): The Tonga men’s soccer team have bowed out of the qualifying rounds for the 2018 Soccer World Cup in Russia after they lost 1-2 to American Samoa in Veitongo earlier this afternoon in the second round of the Oceania Football Confederation qualifiers.
The side had earlier lost to Cook Islands 3-0 on Monday and needed a win today to have a chance of winning the Stage 1 qualifiers.
Meanwhile, Cook Islands beat Samoa 1-0 to record their second win.
They now lead the qualifying series and just need to draw against American Samoa to confirm their top spot.
The final rounds of matches will be held on Friday.
