PM is now TRU Chairman and President
NUKU’ALOFA-May 17: 5.18pm (Nuku’alofa Times): The Prime Minister is the new Chairman and President of the Tonga Rugby Union.
This follows the passing and adoption of changes to the TRU Constitution during the Annual General Meeting in Nuku’alofa last week.
Times Sport can confirm the change.
That now means that Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva becomes the new TRU President and Chairman.
He will head a new Board that is being reduced from 10 to seven, with majority of that to be Government reps.
Fe’ao Vunipola, who was elected Interim Chairman and President late last year following the resignation of Epi Taione, has now been replaced following the changes to the Constitution.
Times Sport was told that former IKale Tahi coach Sione Taumoepeau had challenged the changes and said that the TRU Constitution can only be changed by 75 percent of the Board and union reps.
However, the meeting was told that the changes only needed the vote of the majority.
Meanwhile, former TRU Chief Executive Officer Fuka Kitekeiaho has taken the TRU to Court.
He is challenging his removal by Fe’ao Vunipola and the way Fe’ao was elected as the 2015 meeting to replace Taione.
Fuka said the case will be heard on June 20.
He is being represented by William Edwards.
