Tonga 2019 Pacific Games is on!

NUKU’ALOFA-March 24: 1:48pm(Nuku’alofa Times): The PRC Design Team are here! And the questions of “Whether the Game is on or not” has been answered.

That was the remark from the Secretary General of TASANOC, Takitoa Taumoepeau after the Tonga 2019 Pacific Games Organizing Committee met with the PRC Design Team for the Tonga High School Sports Complex.

The PRC Design Team from Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) arrived last Tuesday 21 March and was led by Mr Zi Ling Pan and joined by specialists from various fields related for the design for sports that will be hosted in the complex.

They were also joined by members of the PRC Embassy in Tonga, Miss Xu Ye and Mr Li.

Lord Sevele, Chairman of the Tonga 2019 Organizing Committee (OC) welcomed the delegation to the Headquarter of the Tonga National Olympic Committee (TASANOC) at Haveluloto. The PRC Design team took the meeting through what they had prepared (draft design and concept) of the THS sports complex and engaged in dialogue and discussion with the committee.

Last year, the Tonga Government confirmed the assistance by the PRC Government to funding the construction of the Tonga High School Complex for the tune of TOP33m. A survey team from PRC was sent last year to source out information on various areas related to the proposal for the sports to be held at the complex.

To date, the assigned sports for the THS Sports Complex will be Lawn Bowls, Netball (outdoor), swimming pool, rugby field and an indoor gymnasium (which will be multi-purpose and can host several numbers of indoor sports such as basketball, volleyball, boxing, table tennis and others. The PRC Design team will finalize with the Government Facilities Committee (GFC) the sports program for the complex so they can finalize their specs and design.

Joining the meeting yesterday was Andrew Minogue, Executive Director of Pacific Games Council who was very pleased with the meeting and assisted in providing both technical and general information on venues and facilities on behalf of the PGC. Other members of the OC in attendance were Pesalili Tuiano from Ministry of Infrastructure, Balwyn Fa’otusia, Ministry of Finance, Sakopo Lolohea, OC Admin, Ross Chapman, OC Sponsorship and Takitoa Taumoepeau, SG and Director of Venues.

The PRC Design team is expected to be in Tonga for 27 days and would meet all key stakeholders and national federations whose sports are in the complex and also with reference to their respective International Federations (IF’s).
