Ali Cupper pitches Tonga partnership
MILDURA, Australia-April 7: 2:10pm(SUNRAYSIA DAILY): Mildura councillor Ali Cupper says the Tongan community should be allowed to present the case for a sister city relationship with Nuku’alofa.
Tongan community leaders, the Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council and former mayor Peter Byrne have reignited debate about a link with the Tongan capital.
A report prepared in 2013 found Mildura could offer support to Tonga in health, education and law enforcement through a sister city relationship.
Cr Cupper said the information should be presented to Councillors at a forum.
A proposed link between Mildura and the Tongan capital Nuku’alofa would be worthwhile, Australia’s top representative in the Pacific Island kingdom says.
Tongan community leaders and the Sunraysia Mallee Ethnic Communities Council (SMECC) are looking to revive the sister city idea, with help from former Mildura mayor Peter Byrne.
Australia’s High Commissioner to Tonga, Andrew Ford, was to raise the topic with members of Mildura Council.
