Tonga Language to be taught in a Chinese Uni
BEIJING, China-April 13: 11:22am(Pire Port): A University in China, the Beijing Foreign Studies University, will soon be teaching the Tongan language to interested undergraduate students.
According to the Shanghai Daily, the University currently teaches 84 languages and plans to increase that number to 100 by 2020. The Tongan language was recently added to the list along with Samoan, Maori and other little known languages from around the world.
Guo Wei, an official at the University, said “The university is helping to equip more students with language skills and knowledge of regional affairs to meet the demand.”
They are developing proficiency in languages of countries they trade with.
“Chinese proficient in local languages and cultures are lacking in some participating countries of the Belt and Road Initiative.”
The Belt and Road Initiative is a development strategy of the Chinese Government, focusing on strengthening China’s connectivity with other countries by establishing the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank and Silk Road Fund, which aims to inject new power to the world economy.
