SUVA, Fiji-May 17: 2:53pm(Fiji Times): Fiji Association of Sports And National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) president Joseph Rodan, says Fiji is ready to host the 2019 Pacific Games if given the permission.

This follows Tonga’s withdrawal from hosting because of heavy economic costs it would occur to the island kingdom.

Rodan said Fiji had the best facilities in the region to cater for international games.

“We are so well organised and capable of hosting any games and it is not a problem. That is the way I look at it,” he said.

“Finance would be the main issue and Government has to approve the hosting of the game at the end of the day.

“In Fiji, we have been hosting the Melanesian Games and Oceania Games and had been organised very well. Finance is a big issue and we have the best people who can organise different sports.”

According to the media reports, Tongan Prime Minister, Akilisi Pohiva decided to pull out from hosting after he was made aware of a World Bank report last week which highlighted the economic difficulties Tonga could face if they continue to host the Games.

“Before Fiji bids to host the Games, we have to meet with the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Government, and once give us the approval then we can go ahead and bid,” Rodan added.

“It is sad to hear that Tonga has withdrawn from hosting the Games because it could have been good in terms of the development of sport in Tonga and it could have also improved the economy of Tonga by having in more people for the Games.”

Meanwhile, the Pacific Mini Games will be held in Vanuatu in December.
