DPM to be farewelled by staff
NUKU’ALOFA-September 3: 4.22pm (Nuku’alofa Times): In a move that confirms the end of Deputy Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni’s term in Cabinet, his staff at the Ministry of MEIDECC here in Nuku’alofa will farewell him on Wednesday, September 6.
That confirms the news that DPM Sovaleni and Finance Minister Tevita Lavemaau have been removed by Caretaker Prime Minister Samuela Pohiva.
Lands and Survey Minister Lord Ma’afu is now the new DPM with Enterprises Minister Poasi Tei taking over as Minister of MEIDECC.
Hon Dr Pohiva Tuionetoa also takes over as Finance Minister.
On the same token PM Pohiva confirmed from Apia in Samoa today that he had asked His Majesty King Tupou VI to remove DPM Sovaleni and Hon Lavemaau from their positions as Cabinet Ministers.
PM Pohiva said the two Ministers knew about His Majesty’s plans to dissolve Parliament and Government but did not tell him (Pohiva) and Cabinet.
Speaking to Radio 87.5, PM Pohiva said he had made his decision based on that.
He also highlighted the fact that there were some discrepancies with the authorisation of government funding to host the opening cocktails at the St George Palace in Nuku’alofa, which was officially opened by King Tupou VI last Friday.
PM Pohiva said he did not authorise the use of Government funds for that event and had not signed the payment voucher.
There has been no statement forthcoming from the two former Cabinet Ministers.
Nuku’alofa Times understands that the two, who won seats at the 2014 General Elections, will stand again for the November elections ordered by His Majesty.
