Only 86 candidates for 2017 Elections

NUKU’ALOFA-October 1: 11.33am (Nuku’alofa Times): Only 86 candidates have registered for the 2017 General Elections, called by His Majesty King Tupou VI two months ago.

This is 20 less than the confirmed candidates at the last elections in 2014.

At the close of registrations this past week, the Supervisor of Elections Pita Vuki confirmed the names of those that have registered for the 17 Peoples Representative seats in the Tonga Legislative Assembly.

Notable are the candidacy of all current Member of Parliament, including Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva, who had announced at the 2014 General Elections that he was not going to run for another term.

Also notable are the confirmed registration of women candidates for the different constituencies.

In the running also are members of the newly launched political party – the Langafonua ‘o Masiva Party, led by former MPs in ‘Isileli Pulu (Tongatapu 4), Sifa Tu’utafaiva (Tongatapu 6), Sunia Fili (;Eua 11), Sangster Saulala (Tongatapu 7) and current MP Dr Aisake Valu Eke (Tongatapu 5).

The confirmed candidates now have one month to campaign and win the votes of electorals in their different constituencies.
