Cyclone GITA – advisory No.11 for Tonga

Cyclone Gita's pathway also shows that it can hit the island of Ono-i-Lau in Fiji

NUKU’ALOFA-February 12, 2018: 10.40am (Nuku’alofa Times): Cyclone Gita is well on its way to ‘Eua and Tontatapu, with the weather office predicting it will intensify to category 5 when it hits the two islands later tonight.

The 11th bulletin issues from Fua’amotu this morning predicts the increasing wind strength as the cyclone makes its way towards the capital city of Nuku’alofa.

TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING:
A  HURRICANE WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR TONGATAPU AND ‘EUA.
A STORM WARNING IS NOW IN FORCE FOR THE NOMUKA, MANGO, FONOI AND NEARBY SMALL ISLANDS.
A GALE WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR THE REST OF HA’APAI GROUP.
A STRONG WIND WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR VAVA’U AND THE  NIUAS.
A DAMAGING SWELL WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR TONGATAPU,’EUA,HA’APAI AND VAVA’U.
A HEAVY RAIN AND FLASH FLOOD WARNING REMAINS IN FORCE FOR HA’APAI, TONGATAPU AND ‘EUA.
SITUATION:
SEVERE TROPICAL CYCLONE GITA, CATEGORY 4, WAS LOCATED NEAR 21.6 SOUTH 171.0 WEST OR  440KM EAST OF TONGATAPU OR 405KM EAST-SOUTHEAST OF LIFUKA AT 07:00AM THIS MORNING. CLOSE TO ITS CENTER, THE CYCLONE IS EXPECTED TO HAVE AVERAGE WINDS OF 90 KNOTS POSSIBLY INCREASING TO 110 KNOTS BY 7:00PM THIS EVENING.

THE CYCLONE IS MOVING WEST-SOUTHWEST  ABOUT 11 KNOTS. VERY DESTRUCTIVE HURRICANE FORCE WINDS ARE EXPECTED FROM THIS EVENING FOR TONGATAPU AND ‘EUA.

LIGHT TO MODERATE SOUTH TO SOUTHWEST WINDS, INCREASING TO DAMAGING WINDS OF 30-35 KNOTS WITH MOMENTARY GUST UP TO 50 KNOTS THIS AFTERNOON, POSSIBLY INCREASING TO 80 KNOTS WITH MOMENTARY GUST TO 100 KNOTS FROM THIS EVENING. OVERCAST WITH OCCASSIONAL RAIN HEAVY AT TIMES WITH THUNDERSTORMS.
VERY ROUGH TO HIGH SEAS. A HEAVY SOUTHEAST DAMAGING SWELL ON COASTAL AREAS.FOR NOMUKA, MANGO, FONOI AND NEARBY SMALL ISLANDS:
